dream in color

Bougainvilleas hold a special place in my heart. I’m not sure why. They seem to remind me of something–though, I don’t know what–or perhaps they just evoke a certain sentiment when I see them. I suppose it could be because they remind me of home, and because I admire their tenacity; I’ve seen these plants survive scorching summers and remain just as beautiful as the day they sprung. And while they do shrivel up a bit come wintertime, it’s only a matter of time before their bright, showy leaves emerge again, victorious and proud. At times, I feel there’s much I can learn from something as unassuming as a shrub, if only I’d make the effort to sit still and observe.
(By the way, for years I was completely unaware that the pink “petals” that make these plants so alluring are actually just leaves that surround the true flowers that bloom in the center.)
